Option2 - Replacing the original case

7. Measure and cut boards

Cut boards 1/16” longer than the height of the textblock. The width of the board is the measurement from the shoulder of the textblock to the its foredge.

8. Cut inlay

Cut an inlay strip of 10 pt. bristol or heavy paper stock. The inlay should be cut to the length of the boards and the thickness of the spine.

9. Cut book cloth

Cut a piece of book cloth 1 1/2” or more longer than the perimeter of the textblock measured from foredge to foredge around the spine and as wide as the length of the boards plus at least 1 1/2”

10. Assemble case

• Glue up bookcloth

• Place inlay on bookcloth aligned with the head and tail of the board and the right side of the board leaving a 1/4” hinge space between the inlay the the board.

Note: The cutting guard aligns the boards and inlay at the top edge and also gauges the turnover at the top.

• Place second board to right of inlay leaving a 1/4” hinge space.
   

• Trim any excess bookcloth

• Trim bookcloth corners

• Turn head and tail turnovers

• Pinch and turn foredge turnovers

• Define joints at board's edge

10. Case in textblock

• Dry fit the textblock into the case.  Once it is properly aligned, carefully place it on the table and open one side without moving the textblock.  Glue the exposed pastedown.

• Fit the case spine over the textblock spine and close the board onto the pastedown.  Turn the book over and repeat the process on the reverse side.

• Press the book with raised edge boards setting the hinge grooves.  Leave in the press at least 5 minutes (assuming you are using PVA), remove from the press and leave overnight under a weighted board.
