Wood
is good ... but not for screws.
Wood warps, swells and
chips. On muggy days wood threads can be sluggish and sticky as
they expand with increases in humidity.. Overtime they can warp
and jam. On any day the threads of a wood screw can easily
chip or shear. When a screw is tightened, the threads are stressed
parallel to the grain of the wood, the direction in which wood is most
readily sheared. An examination of old wood screw presses will show that thread failure
is probable and likely.
A better option...
Our finishing presses are
equipped with screws and nuts made from Acetal (also known under
the brand name Delrin), an engineering grade (anything but cheap)
plastic. With strength comparable to metal and a coefficient of
friction that ensures smooth operation, our acetal screws will
outperform and outlast wood screws.
